Want to make a quick difference for the environment in just a few quick clicks? Not all of us can ride aboard a Greenpeace ship or picket bulldozers posed to strike the rainforest (though many of us really would if we could), but all of us can routinely take an action here or there to stand up for what we believe in—a sustainable, healthy planet. Here are several fast online activities you can engage in to be an advocate for our planet.
Stop the Smog: Did you know that 37 million kids in America live in areas where the smog production makes it unhealthy to actually breathe in the air? What are these children and their parents supposed to do, hold their breath all day? Where I live, we’re told to go outside for some fresh, healthy air, and that the air in your home is much worse for you than the air outside; it’s just shocking for me to imagine the opposite. Click here to find out more information and to write to President Obama and ask that the copious smog production in the United States be reduced as soon as possible.
Ask for Clean Water: If we can’t count on clean air, I suppose it’s even more radical to demand clean water, isn’t it? It’s understandable if things happen that contaminate our water on accident and then require repair—but it’s absolutely unconscionable when our water is tainted by businesses that use it as a dumping ground for their toxic materials. How is this legal at all? These companies should be shut down when they are found doing these despicable acts! Since we can’t expect that much, the least we should be able to ask for is that they keep their waste out of our streams and water in general. Click here to read more and to ask that businesses not be allowed to poison us.
Tell Jason Organics to Stop the Greenwashing: Oh, Jason Organics! I used to love you so much. I have three of your products in my shower right now. You’re so affordable and, I thought, so ethical. It turns out that I was wrong, though, wasn’t I? Even your name is untruthful. Not only do your products contain few organic ingredients—they are also made up with just as many toxic ingredients as regular products, if not more! How dare you try to poison us while still maintaining your so-called green image. No more, Jason Organics! Click here to find out which other companies are also greenwashing their products—and to tell them that we’re not gonna take it anymore!
Stand Up Against Offshore Drilling: Ever since the BP fiasco last fall, you might think that most people would be against offshore drilling—but whether it’s the price of gas or simple apathy when it comes to the environment, many people are still calling for it, and the powers that be are listening. So those of us against it have to speak up, too. Sign up here to take part in a worldwide day against offshore drilling on June 25. This one actually demands a few moments of offline support—but we all need to get out and feel connected to the Earth we wish to support every now and again, right?
