The Special Olymipics have been around since 1968. This is a nonprofit organization with 220 offices globally. The Special Olympics are held all over the planet. Before competing, athletes are to say the oath, which is as follows: “Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.”

This oath is inspiring and gives athletes the courage to at least try. After all, the only way you can truly fail is if you never at least try. The Special Olympics organization has been ranked first out of eleven organizations that exist to help serve people with disabilities. This esteemed ranking comes from Philanthropedia. This is a subsidiary of the industry non-profit data leader Guidestar. Philanthropedia has evaluated the effectiveness of these eleven nonprofits by surveying industry experts. This allows them to identify the highest-impacting non-profits.

Based on research and statistics, Philanthropedia has determined that there are approximately 54 million individuals on the planet with at least one disability. 20% of that population resides in the U.S. It also estimated that about 200 million people on earth have intellectual disabilities.

The Special Olympics organization works within communities to build acceptance for persons with disabilities. The Special Olympics is considered one of today’s biggest social movements that challenges our society’s view of how able bodied a person with mental or physical disabilities really is.
