SOPA stands for Stop Online Piracy Act and this act is trying to be passed in congress and it's bad news. Do you notice how these days some YouTube videos won’t play due to copyright infringement? Are you scratching your head… this is just the beginning people!
Until recently, the internet has been a free internet; that is: a place where people can creatively collaborate and have open access to music and movies and other forms of media, as well as documents and information on any and every subject matter that exists on the planet. Right now there is a bill circulating in Washington that congress is hoping to pass. This bill was written by the content industry. This bill would allow for the U.S. Government to block American citizens from viewing websites that the bill considers objectionable. Additionally, it may force children in third world countries to pay ($12 for example) out of pocket to view educational materials and text that would otherwise be free. I don’t know about you, but the idea of that pisses me off.
I’m not the only one who is pissed, Reddit, MetaFilter, 4chan, Mozilla, Grooveshark, Techdirt and Fight for the Future are just a few of the hundreds of sites fed up with the idea of this bill passing too!
If this bill passed, that adorable video that you uploaded to Facebook of your daughter singing Taylor Swift karaoke would be taken down. Furthermore, you would no longer have open access to the many sources of freely posted information due to copyright infringement. Protect your rights!
This bill would also stand in the way of technological innovation, which, some will argue, is the only thing keeping our economy afloat these days!
The 99% is fighting hard and so far winning. Don’t let us lose! Our course of attack is as follows: Congress is on holiday right now. Therefore, our main priority should be this: sign up as many people as possible to commit to calling their senator on Tuesday, when the offending 1%’ers head back to the office. Doing this is more effective than occupying the streets! Sign up here!
