Do you appreciate a company that gives its profits to the community by supporting women’s rights and current issues, environmental stewardship and economic development? Then, please turn your attention to One Mango Tree. This is a company based in Uganda that goes to support the women within the region by training them to be tailors.

Due to war in Uganda, many families are displaced and live outside of main town. Therefore, it would normally take these women many miles of distance covered by foot to get from work to home. One Mango Tree noted this and provided the tailors with a bike (with a basket attached) for transportation to and from the workshop. Though these also benefit the family in other ways too, allowing for less time spent walking and more time spent at work and at home. The bikes were shipped in from Kenya and featured a sticker that says, “Smart Lady”. In Uganda, the term “smart” alludes to someone who is good looking and has their life together.

Additionally, One Mango Tree provides these women school fee scholarships. These are used to pay for the school fees to send both their children and orphaned children in their care to school. The founder and Director of One Mango Tree, Halle Butvin recognized that majority of the women’s income working as a tailor went towards school fees, so she allowed for the company to provide this assistance so that the tailors’ income could be used towards other expenses in their household.
