This video is an excerpt from Dirt! The Movie, a movie about the true nature of soil, how soil is made over millennia, why healthy soil is alive, how we are killing our soil, and why soil is crucial for the future of all life on Earth. The video is narrated by Wangari Maathai, a Kenyan environmental and political activist. She's one of the founders of the green belt movement, a planet-wide effort to plant sustainable trees and preserve areas of green belt. In the clip below, Wangari Maathai tells a story about doing the very best we can, even when the odds seem unsurmountable. That is when, most of all, we must still do the best we can, all of us.

In a lifetime that has alternated between education, activism, and political prosecution, Dr. Maathai was both imprisoned by the government of Kenya, and elected to parliament. In 2004, Wangari Maathai received the Nobel Peace Prize for "her contribution to sustainable development, democracy and peace." She became the first African woman, and the first environmentalist, to win the Nobel Peace Prize.
