“I am not a racist. I just don’t believe in mixing the races that way” is what Louisiana J udge Keith Bardwell used as justification for his refusal to grant a marriage license to an interracial couple. Personally, I think he's one of the scumbags tainting the judiciary and I thank God he is not a member of any Federal Courts- he’d probably refuse the right of Appeal based on race alone.
The year is 2009 and someone who has supposedly been elected by the people to satisfy the laws of our government has basically taken us back to the 1960’s in terms of rights for people of all races.
The Judge went on The Early Show to defend his actions to the public, claiming that he merely recused himself from issuing the license and that everything was all fine and dandy now because the couple married two weeks later. According to the less-than-honorable and most certainly not venerated judge, he might also recuse himself from marrying a couple if they were drunk.
WTF? First, I think it’s time that this judge should be kicked off the bench. Interracial marriage is legal in this country and there is no reason for him to recuse himself from issuing a marriage license. It’s scary to me that we live in a country in which this kind of behavior is acceptable. More than this, the underlying racism of late is more than slightly sinister.
The Obama backlash for the color of his skin is bringing out the rednecks in droves. When will Americans wake up and realize that we have elected a black president to the United States and that anything Obama has or has not done for this country has nothing to do with the color of his skin? We are living in a time when commentators on Fox News are joking about lynchings, and now a judge has refused the right for two legal adults to marry each other.
We also have to take responsibility for what we do. To avoid another Timothy McVeigh-type bombing similar to what we had in the 90’s, the reasonable people in the country, who represent an overwhelming majority of the people, need to fight back and support organizations like the ACLU who protect our legal rights and integrity.
