While the week is almost over (August 25 through 31), you still have time to get involved with Be Kind to Humankind Week. And even if you miss out this weekend, why not have your own week later in the year? Every day is a great day to show kindness.
A celebration of people and kindness across the globe, Be Kind to Humankind Week is the perfect opportunity to start volunteering, caring for your neighbors, and generally practicing kindness.
Each day of the week during Be Kind to Humankind Week has its own theme:
Sacrifice Our Wants for Others’ Needs Sunday: This is a day to set aside your own desires and help someone else. Some suggestions include volunteering at a nursing home or at a hospital.
Motorist Consideration Monday: Why not give up road rage for the day, or even work with Mothers Against Drunk Driving?
Touch-a-Heart Tuesday: Tell people you love them, call a friend, or make some homemade soup for a sick neighbor.
Willing to Lend a Hand Wednesday: Today is a helping day! Try lending a hand to someone in need, whether it’s a person with a flat or a fever.
Thoughtful Thursday: Get creative and put some thought into something really cool and really kind you could do today. Maybe you could paint a mural for a rundown school, or host a tea party for seniors.
Forgive Your Foe Friday: What could be stronger than practicing the art of forgiveness? An old nemesis, a family member, a friend who did you wrong, or even someone who has parted from this world… whatever he or she did to you, can you find it in your heart to offer forgiveness today? It will benefit you just as much, if not more, by releasing such feelings.
Speak Kind Words Saturday: We often say very hurtful and even hateful things that we don’t mean. Today listen to how you sound and practice a little kindness with your language. Every time you hear yourself start to say something mean or call someone something nasty, issue yourself a gentle reminder to be kind.
Of course, you don’t have to stick to this theme to participate in this weeklong event! Be kind in any way you know how. Maybe you could mow the grass of a neighbor whose back is out, or you could help care for someone’s child in a pinch. Maybe you could make a meal and share it with a hungry person, or simply do something random for a stranger, such as paying for a toll or a cup of coffee at the drive-thru.
Get your kids and community involved. Maybe your church has a few theme ideas for the week where each member could do something for another member, or they could challenge members to do an act of kindness for a non-church member. Perhaps your youth group, school, or business could make it a fun volunteer activity.
