5 Ways to Help Haiti
Estimates of 100,000 people killed and countless damages are in from the tragic earthquake that hit Haiti on Tuesday. If you are looking for a way to help, there are plenty of organizations open for donations and aid. Here are a few you may want to consider.
Ask Obama for Leniency: If you have no money to donate, consider asking the president to grant Haitians temporary protected status and stop deporting people back to the country in this dire hour. There’s no reason to be sending immigrants back to a destroyed and dangerous area where their safety will be in peril. You can write to President Obama here.
Text to Give: Text HAITI to 90999 and $10 dollars will be added to your phone bill to support the International Red Cross.
Donate Your Facebook Status: If you can’t give money for relief efforts, give space and ask friends and family to donate by promoting one of these organizations on your Facebook, MySpace, or other webpage. If you do have the funds, think about sharing some to help out Haitians.
- UNICEF is accepting donations to help the children hit by the disaster.
- CARE is sending emergency team members to help with on-the-ground efforts; donations are needed to fund their efforts.
- American Jewish World Service is taking donations to fund the most urgent needs of the general population affected
- Doctors Without Borders is supplying much-needed emergency medical care for the people in the area
- Partners in Health are also supplying emergency medical relief
- The United Nations Population Fund is providing relief for women in Haiti
Email This Page to a Friend or Family Member: By doing this you can raise awareness and help generate donations that are very much needed. Consider sharing this page or any of the links aboveon your social networks, StumbleUpon, DIGG, and any other networks you use.
Raise Awareness and Funds: Mention the crisis at school, work, church, or any other place you go and ask people to come together to generate some funds—or, if they can’t, to spread the word to others and keep the message going. See if you can get a donation jar passed around, or even a full-fledged fundraiser going. Maybe the school could do a penny drive, rummage sale, or bake sale to raise money; given the weather, perhaps shoveling snow or providing rides for cash would work in certain communities as well.
