Aung San Suu Kyi
Aung San Suu Kyi, Nobel LaureateAung San Suu Kyi, Burma's Pro-Democracy leader, has been in and out of house arrest for the last 13 years in Burma due to her efforts to secure democracy for Burma. She is now facing 3-5 years incarceration for allegedly violating the terms of her house arrest when an American man entered her home without permission and refused to leave and is being held in prison now. The United Nations has deemed her current incarceration illegal under international law and people all across the globe are protesting her incarceration, but this has not stopped the Burmese regime from their persecution of her or the political party she belongs to, the National League for Democracy.
Despite the fact that the National League for Democracy won 82% of the parliamentary seats in a national election in the late 1980's, the government has never recognized or validated the results of the election. Around that time, the government killed approximately 5,000 demonstrators.
The web site 64 for Suu.org is starting an international campaign to raise awareness and get international support for Aung San Suu Kyi to help her in her fight. Please visit the web site to leave your own message of support. If you wish to go about it another way, you may wish to directly pressure your elected officials at the federal level to focus attention on the matter. Currently on the web site, many British officials have joined in their support of her.
